James Joyce’s Araby is a modernist short story set in Dublin, depicting various emotions and experiences of a young boy during his growth, covering themes such as love, loneliness, and epiphany. This paper adopts a qualitative approach to analyze the language and symbols in Araby from a deconstructionist viewpoint. It reveals the dynamic interplay and transformation of apparent opposites such as “childish impulse” and “rational growth”, “innocence” and “vulgarity”, “gap” and “hope”, validating Jacques Derrida’s assertion that meaning is constructed through difference and instability. This study aims to provide a new perspective on Western modernist literature, transcending structuralist constraints and offering fresh insights and reflections for literary criticism and analysis of similar works.
