《聊斋志异》作为中国古典文学的瑰宝,其深厚的文化底蕴和独特的艺术魅力使其在跨文化交流中占据重要地位。自从1842年被引入英语世界后,这部作品经历了多个版本的翻译和传播,其中以翟理斯的英译本最具影响力和学术价值,成为研究的焦点。本研究以《聊斋志异·卷一·长清僧》中翟理斯的英文翻译版本和但明伦的评注版本为研究对象,从词汇选择、句子构造和语篇结构等多方面,深入分析翟理斯在翻译活动中译者主体性的行为表征。研究同时分析翟理斯英译的不足及原因,期望能为中国典籍的全球传播提供一些参考和启示。As a treasure of Chinese classical literature, the Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio occupies an important position in cross-cultural communication due to its profound cultural heritage and unique artistic charm. Since its introduction to the English-speaking world in 1842, this work has undergone numerous translations and dissemination, among which Herbert Allen Giles’ English version stands out as the most influential and academically valuable, becoming a focus of research. This study takes Giles’ English translation of The Buddhist Priest of Ch’ang-Ch’ing (from Volume One of Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio) and Tan Ming-lun’s commentary version as the research objects, conducting an in-depth analysis of Giles’ manifestation of translator’s subjectivity in translation activities from aspects such as vocabulary selection, sentence structure, and text organization. The study also analyzes the shortcomings and reasons behind Giles’ English translation, aiming to provide some references and insights for the global dissemination of Chinese classics.
