This paper presents a novel mechanical attachment, i.e., nonlinear energy sink (NES), for suppressing the limit cycle oscillation (LCO) of an airfoil. The dynamic responses of a two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) airfoil coupled with an NES are studied with the harmonic balance method. Different structure parameters of the NES, i.e., mass ratio between the NES and airfoil, NES offset, NES damping, and nonlinear stiffness in the NES, are chosen for studying the effect of the LCO suppression on an aeroelastic system with a supercritical Hopf bifurcation or subcritical Hopf bifurcation, respectively. The results show that the structural parameters of the NES have different influence on the supercritical Hopf bifurcation system and the subcritical Hopf bifurcation system.
By applying the second order Melnikov function, the chaos behaviors of a bistable piezoelectric cantilever power generation system are analyzed. Firstly, the conditions for emerging chaos of the system are derived by the second order Melnikov function. Secondly, the effects of each item in chaos threshold expression are analyzed. The excitation frequency and resistance values, which have the most influence on chaos threshold value, are found. The result from the second order Melnikov function is more accurate compared with that from the first order Melnikov function. Finally, the attraction basins of large amplitude motions under different exciting frequency, exciting amplitude, and resistance parameters are given.
A modified Lindstedt-Poincaré (LP) method for obtaining the resonance periodic solutions of nonlinear non-autonomous vibration systems is proposed in this paper. In the modified method, nonlinear non-autonomous equa-tions are converted into a group of linear ordinary differential equations by introducing a set of simple transformations. An approximate resonance solution for the original equation can then be obtained. The periodic solutions of primary, super-harmonic, sub-harmonic, zero-frequency and combination resonances can be solved effectively using the modi-fied method. Some examples, such as damped cubic nonlinear systems under single and double frequency excitation, and damped quadratic nonlinear systems under double frequency excitation, are given to illustrate its convenience and effectiveness. Using the modified LP method, the first-order approximate solutions for each equation are obtained. By comparison, the modified method proposed in this paper produces the same results as the method of multiple scales.
